The last maharaja of Burdwan, Udaychand Mahtab, left the whole property of Burdwan to the administration of West Bengal after the zamindari framework finished during the 1950s. The then boss pastor of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy stepped up of setting up a college at the premises of the castle of the maharaja. Along these lines the college was set up in 1960. Sukumar Sen (ICS) was the main bad habit chancellor. The college started with the humanities division, with the science and designing courses included afterwards.
The University of Burdwan (also known as Burdwan University or B. U.) is a premier Four Star public college in Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, India. It was set up by the West Bengal Government as an instructing and affiliating college on 15 June 1960 with six alumni offices and 30 undergrad schools spread more than three locale that go under the purview of the college. The purview covers Birbhum district, Purba Bardhaman district and Hooghly district except Srirampore development. The fundamental grounds is of 398 acres (around). The University has four scholarly grounds — 1) Golapbag Campus 2) UIT campus for Engineering. 3) Rajbati Campus 4) Tara sack Campus for Medical Education. It has been granted Four Star status by NAAC under UGC, Govt. of India. This University is acclaimed for Law, Management, Engineering and Medical Education.
