The Indian government began 14 RECs somewhere in the range of 1959 and 1965, at Bhopal, Allahabad, Calicut, Durgapur, Kurukshetra, Jamshedpur, Jaipur, Nagpur, Rourkela, Srinagar, Surathkal, Surat, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal). It set up one in Silchar in 1967 and added two others found at Hamirpur in 1986, and Jalandhar in 1987.In 2004, MHRD gave NIT status to three additional universities, situated at Patna (Bihar Engineering College – a 110-year-old school), Raipur (Government Engineering College), This would prompt each state in India having its own NIT.
The redesign was planned along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) after it was presumed that RECs had potential as demonstrated by the accomplishment of their graduated class and their commitments in the field of specialized schooling. Hence, financing and self-sufficiency for NITs expanded. The progressions actualized suggestions of the “High Powered Review Committee” (HPRC). The HPRC, led by Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, presented its report named “Strategic Road Map for Academic Excellence of Future RECs” in 1998.
