Fisheries College and Research Institute was begun at Thoothukudi by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in October 1977 as the second fisheries school in India. It was brought under the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) on 19th September 1989.
The school was renamed as Fisheries College and Research Institute (FC and RI) in 1990 to zero in additional examination and expansion exercises. The FC&RI has four grounds: the Main Campus, the Shore Laboratory Campus, and the grounds that house staff quarters, and Mariculture Research Farm Facility situated at Tharuvaikulam, a beachfront town 17 km away from the principal grounds, for undertaking Mariculture/Coastal Aquaculture exercises.
